Simon Timmermans emigrated from the Netherlands to the United States, where he settled in Menominee Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. His letters back to his parents and brother Mathias would convince them to come to America in 1863.

Simon and Rosa Timmermans first lived in Menominee Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. Simon was naturalized a citizen of the United States on June 1, 1870, in Jo Daviess County; witnesses were Herman DeJager and Matthew Timmermans (this was Simon's brother, who was also naturalized a citizen that day). In 1880, they had moved their growing family to Cass Township, Shelby County, Iowa, and in less than a decade the family moved once again, further west, to Holt County, Nebraska, where they homesteaded 160 acres in Section 35, Township 32, Range 15.*
