Notes about Mathias Timmermans

Mathis and Anna Mary (Opstal) Timmermans and their firstborn child Willem left Horn in 1863 to emigrate to the United States, where they settled in Menominee, Township, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. Mathis, whose name in America was Mathias or Matthew was naturalized a citizen of the United States on June 1, 1870, in Jo Daviess County; witnesses were Herman DeJager and Simon Timmermans (this was Matthew's brother, who was also naturalized a citizen that day).
In 1870, the U.S. Census lists the Timmerman family consisting of Matthew, age 45, a farmer; Maria, age 34; and their children, William, age 7; Christina, age 5; John, age 4; and Maria, age 3 months. Ten years later, the census has the family consisting of Matthew, age 53, farmer; his wife Anna M., age 46, keeping house; and children, William, age 17; Christine, age 15; John, age 12; and Mary, age 10.

By 1900, the Timmerman household consisted only of Mathias, age 74, and his son, John, age 32. The census gives Mathias's year of arrival in the United States as 1864.
