Marinus doet de L.S. en gaat op twaalfjarige leeftijd in de leer bij een kleermaker. Na een goed ander halfjaar geeft hij de brui aan het kleermakersvak en gaat werken bij een bakker. Dat bevalt blijkbaar beter; hij houdt het tot zijn zes en twintigste vol. De bakkersloopbaan wordt onderbroken voor het vervullen van de militaire dienstplicht. In de jaren 1906-1907 is hij ingedeeld bij een compagnie van het pantsercorps als kanonnier der eerste klasse. Op 29 oktober treedt hij in dienst van de gemeente politie Leiden. Tijdens deze periode treedt hij in het huwelijk met Adriana de Frel op 28 februari 1912, het huwelijk blijft kinderloos.
Het politiewerk bevalt blijkbaar niet zo erg. Anderhalf jaar later wordt hij meteropnemer bij de Leidse Lichtfabriek. waar hij werkt tot mei 1930. De crisis treft ook hem; hij krijgt ontslag met behoud van wachtgeld in de rang van klerk tot mei 1939.
