Het stadje Elster ligt aan de rivier de Zwarte Elster in Pruizisch Sachzen bij Wittenberg aan de hoofdrivier de Elbe, met welke rivier de Zwarte Elster zich verenigt, een paar uren van Wittenberg, in welke laatste stad Luther begraven ligt. Men zegt dat hij de Luthersche godsdienst aanhing, wat ook wel te begrijpen is omdat in zijn geboortedistrikt het Lutherse geloof alom aanhang had, maar hij is enkele jaren voor zijn dood toch tot de katholieke kerk overgegaan. Zijne vrouw was zeker katholiek welke ook weer uit een katholieke streek kwam (Westphalen). Ook alle kinderen zijn katholiek gedoopt. Hoe die twee in Holland terecht kwamen is niet bekend. We weten wel dat veel mannen elders gingen werken in graafwerken van dijken of kanalen. De kinderen zijn gedoopt in verschilende gemeentes, nl. Alkemade van 1831 tot1835, Rijnsaterswoude 1736 tot 1742, en Roelofarendsveen. Van alle kinderen geboren uit dit huwelijk zijn er maar vier tot een rijpe leeftijd gekomen en gehuwd geweest.
