In 1883 verlooft zij zich met Jan Frederik Wilkens, die zij ontmoet heeft tijdens een vakantie bij één van haar vriendinnen uit Elburg. Onbekend is wie die vriendin was.

Jan Frederik- die meestal Frits wordt genoemd- is drie jaar ouder dan Dina. Hij woont in Veendam en heeft daar de Hogere Burger School doorlopen. Hij slaagt in 1877 met gemiddeld een zes voor de 19 vakken waarin toen les gegeven werd. Dat lijkt matig, maar bedenk wel dat in die tijd een 8 (uitmuntend) het hoogste cijfer was.
Frits is daarna naar Zweden gestuurd om bij een houtzagerij te praktiseren en ervaring in het houtvak op te doen om later te kunnen toetreden tot het familiebedrijf, de houthandel K & J Wilkens, waar hij in 1891 deelgenoot wordt

De familie Wilkens is, evenals de families Meihuizen, Duintjer en Van Linge, een van ondernemers. Daarnaast zijn zij zeer betrokken bij het sociale, culturele en maatschappelijke leven in hun woonplaats.
Ook zijn zij trouwe kerkgangers, wat blijkt uit de acte van 1900 waarin Frits voor 75 gulden voor Dine een zitplaats in “de vrouwenbank” in de Hervormde Kerk in Veendam koopt.
