In de zomer van 1910 mocht de toen 4-jarige Leo Kluijtmans niet met zijn vader mee naar de plaats waar de gouden helm eerder dat jaar was gevonden. Dit wordt voor hem een obsessie die zijn hele verdere leven zou beheersen. Een halve eeuw later wordt dit nog eens versterkt door een spectaculaire verschijning. Een Romeins officier - de legendarische Verzonken Ridder' uit de Peel bracht Leo een boodschap, waarin hij de bevestiging vond van zijn naspeuringen en bevindingen: de legergroep die met een speciale missie onderweg was, was door verraad in een hinderlaag gevallen. aldus Leo. Deze stelling is tot op de dag van vandaag omstreden in archeologische kringen. Maar Leo is hem altijd trouw
gebleven, overtuigd als hij was van hetgeen zich in het jaar 320 na Christus afgespeeld heeft in onze contreien. Het te water raken en het terugvinden van de gouden helm en toebehoren 1590 jaar later was naar zijn stellige mening het gevolg van een veldslag, of overval. Zijn hele leven heeft Leo Kluijtmans als een eenzame Don Quichotte moeten opboksen tegen de in de archeologische wereld steeds meer opgang makende mening als ware de helm een in het moeras gedeponeerde offergave. Leo Kluijtmans overleed in 1988. We vroegen Huub Kluijtmans, zoon van de Ziener van de Peel' zoals Leo ook wel genoemd werd - om te reconstrueren wat zijn vader voor een man was. Een man die tegen alle verdrukking in standvastig geloofde in zijn theo rieën.. Huub vertelt: Mijn vader werd op 4 juli 1906 geboren als derde zoon van Silvester Kluijtmans en Mathilde Schmitz. Zij hadden een tuinderij op de plaats waar nu nog het ouderlijk huis staat. Al heel jong werd Leo geconfronteerd met de archeologie. Op een steenworp' afstand van hun woning werd op 10 juni 1910 de gouden helm gevonden, nabij het Zinkske in Helenaveen. In de dagen na deze vondst toog ieder een naar de Peel, niet alleen om de vindplaats in ogenschouw te nemen maar ook om zijn/haar eigen geluk te beproeven. Thuis werd altijd verteld dat iedere turf opengebroken werd om te zien of er gouden munten in zaten, aldus Huub.
