De komst van de kunstmest maakte het mogelijk om de uitgestrekte heidevelden om te zetten in
landbouwgronden, zoals hier in het zuiden van de gemeente ten westen van Egchel. In het dagboek
van Pius Reijnen uit 1906 lezen we: “Wij hebben de Vlinkenpeel, groot 2 HA, gekocht voor 240 gulden.
Er was veel hout op, Wij hebben ze goed gemaakt en ingezaaid met gras. Er was toen voor het eerst
slakkenmeel en kalk te krijgen. Wij hebben er veel succes mee gehad. Het was het eerste jaar reeds
een goede wei. Ik had 4 runderen gekocht in Meijel.
Van de hele omgeving kwamen de boeren kijken, 't was de eerste weide, die op de hei werd aangelegd.
Ik was toen nog molenaar doch had veel ijver voor boeren.
