Samen met zijn broer Johan I van Brandenburg, volgde hij in 1220 zijn vader op. Tijdens hun minderjarigheid trad de aartsbisschop van Maagdenburg op als plaatsvervangend voogd voor hertog Hendrik I van Anhalt. Samen met zijn broer breidde hij het markgraafschap verder uit en stichtte onder meer de steden Spandau, Berlijn, Frankfurt an der Oder en Prenzlau.
