Notes about Johann I Markgraaf van Brandenburg (1220-56)

Hij erkende Rooms koning Willem van Holland en koos in 1257 mee voor Alfons X van Castilië als Rooms koning, waarmede Brandenburg voor het eerst gebruik maakte van zijn keurrecht. Hij bevorderde handel en de oprichting van steden en stichtte onder meer Berlijn. Frankfurt an der Oder en Neubrandenburg. Johan interfereerde in de Deense troonstrijd en nam daarbij koning Erik V van Denemarken gevangen.
