Op bladzijde 49 tuimel je in het drama van Frans Snijder van Wissenkerke, een hoge ambtenaar van het departement van Justitie.
Hij scheidt van zijn vrouw in 1901; het jaar daarop maakt hij plannen om te trouwen met een ander. Intussen heeft hij iets met Augusta Westberg, die in
november 1902 een moordaanslag op hem pleegt (die mislukt) en zich daarna zelf een kogel door het hoofd jaagt. 'Onder haar kleding trof men op haar
borst een envelopje aan met daarin een portretfoto van Frans Snijder.' Mag Snijder ambtenaar blijven? Na veel gedoe mag dat.
De auteur, M.E. Verburg, besluit: 'Snijder van Wissenkerke hield zich gedurende de volgende jaren bezig met een nieuwe herziening van het Wetboek van
Strafrecht en met de zedelijkheidswetgeving.' Een droogkomische opmerking waar Verburgt patent oop heeft.
