He was the leader of the "Kaapse Patriotte. He was one of the delegates who proceeded to Holland in 1779 to lay the grievancesof the burgers before the Council of Seventeen. He owned the farm Welgelegen, Mowbray, Cape Town - South Africa. At his death in 1793 the farm was taken over by his son Gysbert.

"Oldest son of Graaf Jacob von Rhenen, the 'stamvader' in South Africa. He was generally known as Jacobus. During the last half of the eighteenth century he was one of the outstanding Cape burgers. In public life he filled many important positions. In 1763 he is appointed as a 'luitenant van die tweede Kompanjie Burgerkavallerie'; In 1767 as 'Lid van die Weeskamer' and in in 1775 as 'Burgerraad' - the most senior administrative position a Cape burger could attain during the time of the Company. He was the leader of the 'Kaapse Patriotte'. In 1772 he went on a visit to Europe leaving on the ship "Boselen" and spent eighteen months in Paris to get monies from the French government which he loaned to French troops when they were in trouble at the Cape. They returned via Amsterdam to the Cape in January 1775. He was accompanied by his eighth child Jacob van Reenen III (c 8). He was known as 'Die Oud Heemraad' Lived at 89 Bree Street, Cape Town. He owned the farm, Welgelegen, Mowbray, now part of the Groote Schuur Estate. At his death in 1793 the farm was taken over by his youngest son Gysbert; vide Transfer no 141 dd 17940719. One of the best known burgers in the latter part of the 18th century. He fathered 14 children, 10 sons and 4 daughters. Gysbert (c14) was the last child and father of Maria Johanna van Reenen who married Johan Georg Muller (b3).

 

Maria was six years older than Jacob when they married. Described as a very capable woman. Her children grew up to be outstanding personalities in the Cape during the 18th century. She had a difficult time raising 14 children as Jacob was away a lot attending to his many business interests in the interior and his 3 and 4 year stays in Europe. "
