Jan is gedoopt op 25 augustus 1744 in de Martinikerk en geboren buiten Oosterpoort in Groningen.
In het Ondertrouwboek Groningen 1769-1776, folio 161v staat op 1 mei 1773 de registratie van het voorgenomen huwelijk van Jan Keiser, van Groningen met Alegonda ter Haer (dit moet zijn Alegonda ter Maat), van Groningen pro qua de Diacon J(annes) Timpinga als Oom. Op 24 mei 1773 wordt het huwelijk voltrokken door Ds. Alberthomas in de Martinikerk in Groningen.
Op 18 april 1782 krijgt Jan Willems Keyzer het kleine burgerrecht van de stad Groningen. Daarmee kon je een beroep uitoefenen in de stad. Dat doet hij ook, want op 22 april 1782 wordt hij aangenomen tot volle gildebroeder van het Coopmans- en Cramergilde der stad Groningen. Hij woonde aan het Boterdiep.
Bij verschillende gelegenheden wordt hij genoemd als koopman en schuitevaarder.
Op 10 november 1786 koopt hij met twee anderen een huis van de weduwe Cornelis Bolt (Marchjen ter Maat, zijn schoonzus) om haar boedel te redden; het huis is gelegen aan de Nieuwe Ebbingestraat, naast de Rotterdammerstraat.
Alegonda ter Maat is na het overlijden van haar man naar haar zoon Reinder verhuisd die in Leer woonde. Zij is daar ook overleden.
