Uit informatie van zijn dochter (Jantje Van der Kerff-Udenga) heb ik kunnen opmaken dat Jan eerst als binnenschipper gewerkt heeft en daarna bij de fa. Kruismulder en Zn. Zeeburgerpad te Amsterdam. Op 5-5-1939 is hij vertrokken naar Velsen. Jan heeft ook gewerkt op de scheepswerf van Jan Hinloopen aan de Omval te Amsterdam (zijnde de grootvader van Martin Schreuder-Goedheijt). Hij was hier werkzaam als arbeider (reparatie en onderhoud van woonaken).
