Hillechien en Adriaan hebben elkaar ontmoet in Koesam (Nederllands-Indie) en trouwden in Belinjoe (Bangka). Ze kregen twee kinderen. Adriaan (van beroep machinist en uitvoerder van baggerwerken) Hillechien en kinderen keerden in 1935 terug naar Nederland maar, vanwege de (mondiale) financiele en economische crisis, verhuisde het gezin op 03-11-1937 opnieuw naar Nederlands-Indie

Na de Japanse verovering van Nederlands-Indie in 1941-1942 werd Hillechien in 1942 met haar twee kinderen gevangen gezet (geinterneerd) in het vrouwenkamp in Tjihapit (Bandoeng-West Java). In een later stadium zijn Hillechien en de kinderen nog verplaatst naar het vrouwenkamp Tjideng in Batavia. Zoon Jan mocht gelukkig bij moeder (en broertje) blijven want volgens de Japanse kalender was hij 11 jaar oud. Kinderen van 12 jaar en ouder werden gescheiden van het gezin en gevangen gezet in de mannenkampen.

Hillechien en de kinderen werden op 15-04-1945 door de Engelsen bevrijd. Ze repatrieerden op 11-12-1945 met het Engelse vliegdekschip de 'HMS Colossus' via Semarang naar Colombo (Ceylon) en verbleven daar ongeveer een half jaar in een kamp hoog in de bergen (op ongeveer 100 km ten noord-oosten van de hoofdstad Colombo en 10 km te oosten van de plaats Kandy) om aan te sterken van de kampontberingen. Het kamp was in de Tweede Wereldoorlog het hoofdkwartier van Lord Mountbatten en werd geleid door luitenant-kolonel J.J. Kerfoot en vanaf 10-12-1945 door majoor Hepburn. Van aansterking kwam echter weinig terecht vanwege de vele voedseldiefstallen door de Ceylonezen zelf.

Op 12-04-1946 vertrok het gezin vanuit Colombo met het ms. 'Ruys'. Adriaan die eerder in Batavia op de 'Ruys' had aangemonsterd werd aldus in Colombo met het gezin herenigd. Ze arriveerden in Amsterdam op 04-05-1946.

Vanwege het aanstaande overlijden van schoonmoeder Willempje Cleton is Hillechien vanuit Nederlands-Indie op 27-03-1951 vanuit Tandjong Priok met ss. 'Sibajak' vertrokken en op 21-04-1951 aangekomen in Nederland om voor Willempje en Jan en Willy te zorgen. Willempje overleed de volgende dag op 22-04-1951.
