Adriaan is als 15-jarige zoon met vader Klaas met het ss. 'Koningin der Nederlanden' naar Nederlands Indie vertrokken. Vóór het vertrek mocht Adriaan vervroegd eindexamen doen voor de ambachtschool en behaalde zijn diploma. Samen met vader tekende Adriaan een arbeidsovereenkomst met 'Volker Aannemingsmaatschappij' voor de duur van 6 jaar. De overeenkomst werd met 1 jaar verlengd om de overtocht van moeder Willempje Cleton met zijn 5 zusters (op kosten van de maatschappij) te kunnen terugbetalen.Vader en Adriaan begonnen de werkzaamheden met de voorbereidingen voor het graven van een irrigatiekanaal in Krawang met de gelijknamige baggermolen.

Eenmaal gevestigd in Nederlands-Indie moest Adriaan van 1927 tm 1929 zijn militaire dienstplicht aldaar vervullen. Moeder Willempje, die met de rest van het gezin was achtergebleven in Nederland, heeft meermalen bezoek gekregen van de Marechaussee omdat Adriaan 'geen gehoor' gaf aan de oproep om zijn nederlandse dienstplicht te vervullen. Een communicatieprobleempje zo lijkt het !

Adriaan keerde met zijn gezin in 1935 terug naar Nederland. Echter, blijkens de 'Stamkaart Oost-Indische Ambtenaren' is Adriaan, naar verluidt vanwege de crisistijd, met het gezin op 03-11-1937 per ss. 'Johan van Oldebarneveldt' opnieuw naar Nederlands-Indie afgereisd en werd tweede (bagger)molenbaas op de tin-winning plant op het tin- en pepereiland Bangka.

Na de Japanse verovering van Nederlands-Indie in 1941-1942 werd Adriaan in 1942 door de Japanners gevangen gezet in de gevangenis van Muntok op Bangka. Op 15-08-1945 werden de Jappenkampen en gevangenissen bevrijd door de Engelsen. Uiteindelijk werd Adriaan in december 1945 vrijgelaten en op 04-05-1946 keert het hele gezin terug naar Nederland.

Op 03-03-1947 wordt de tin-baggermolen 'Menoembing' met een aantal runners door de sleepboot 'Thames', met Adriaan aan boord, als werktuigkundige, naar Nederlands-Indie gesleept. Eind 1947 volgden echtgenote Hillechien en de kinderen.

Vanwege het aanstaande overlijden van moeder Willempje Cleton is echtgenote Hillechien vanuit Nederlands-Indie met ss. 'Sibajak' op 21-04-1951 teruggekeerd in Nederland om voor schoonmoeder Willempje en Jan en Willy te zorgen. Willempje overleed de volgende dag op 22-04-1951.

Adriaan is in 1959 definitief teruggekeerd naar Nederland om zich bij zijn gezin te voegen.
