In 1918 verhuisde hij naar het barakkendorp van Radio Kootwijk om daar ‘de cantine’ te beheren. Zo behoorde Beekman tot de eerste bewoners van het barakkendorp. In 1926 bleek Drikus Beekman de aangewezen persoon om de uitbater (geen eigenaar!) te worden van Hotel Radio. Hij zou dit tot 1943 blijven doen.
