Na het overlijden van zijn vader en de liquidatie van de suikerraffinaderijen richtte hij de handelsfirma W. van Oordt & Co 't Witte Hart op (in het boek 'suiker' van mr. G.H.L. van Oordt wordt uitgebreid aandacht besteed aan deze gebeurtenissen).
Gemeenteraadslid van Rotterdam (1897-1905); lid van Raden van beroep voor plaatselijke belastingen; lid van de Voogdijraad Rotterdam I (1907-1916). Ouderling van de Hervormde Gemeente aldaar; lid van het classicaal bestuur (1889-1902); lid (1893-1907) en president (1907-1916) van het College van Gecommitteerden. Onder zijn leiding werd de restauratie van de grote of Sint Laurenskerk gerealiseerd. Regent van 'Vrouwe Groenevelt's Liefdesgesticht' (1894-1916); bestuurslid Nederduitsch Hervormd Diaconessenhuis (1894-1909); voorzitter van de afd. Rotterdam van het Nederlandsch Bijbelgenootschap (1908-1916); bestuurslid van diverse andere christelijke charitatieve instellingen. Officier in de Orde van Oranje Nassau (1911). Mede-oprichter van de Vereeniging der Familie van Oordt en voorzitter van deze vereniging van 1906 tot 1916. Administrateur van de Groene Balsem, mede-oprichter van de Stichting van den Balsem van Van Oordt (1905).
Vanaf 1887 woonde hij met zijn gezin in het familiehuis aan het Bolwerk te Rotterdam.
