Raphaël is geboren als tweeling met broer Mozes. In 1924 is Raphaël ingeschreven in de militieregisters van Alkmaar voor de vervulling van zijn dienstplicht.

Fatale ontsnapping

De ss.'Berenice' was op weg van de Middellandse zee naar Amsterdam, toen het op 9 mei 1940 Duinkerken aanliep. De volgende dag vernam men daar van de invasie in Nederland. Op bevel van de Franse autoriteiten moest de 'Berenice' de haven verlaten en liep o.a. Le Havre, Cherbourg en tenslotte Bordeaux aan. De lading werd gelost en het schip werd in de voorgeschreven kleuren geschilderd.

Op 19 juni 1940 werd van de Franse marine opdracht gekregen Bordeaux te verlaten. Tevoren waren eerst de 22 Nederlandse vluchtelingen ingescheept meest afkomstig uit Belgie. Om 23.00 uur ging het schip in de monding van de rivier de Gironde ten anker en zette de
volgende dag om 12.30 uur de reis voort. Er werd afgesproken met de ss. 'Orpheus', 'Arie Scheffer', het ms. 'Nettie' en de de sleepboot 'Seine' bij elkaar te blijven en via Falmouth (GB) over te steken.

In de nacht van 20 op 21 juni 1940 raakten de schepen van elkaar af, alleen de 'Nettie' bleef in zicht van de 'Bernice'. Bij het aanbreken van de dag was de zee ruw geworden. Om 07.15 uur op 21 juni 1940 werd plotseling een hevige ontploffing waargenomen, tengevolge waarvan de 'Bernice' in 3 minutentijd zonk. De ontploffing was waarschijnlijk veroorzaakt door een torpedo. De ramp vond plaats in de Golf van Biskaje, ca. 40 mijlen uit de Franse kust, vlak onder Belle-Ile-en-Mer (F).

Behalve Mevr. Rina Louise Marsman-Barendregt, echtgenote van letterkundige en dichter Hendrik Marsman, bevonden alle passagiers zich in het ruim en zijn met het schip ten ondergegaan. Het schip zonk zo snel dat geen tijd gevonden werd de reddingsboten te strijken. Negen opvarenden, die zich drijvende hadden gehouden, werden door de Nettie opgepikt, die na nog enige tijd te hebben rondgestoomd naar Falmouth (GB) doorstoomde. De gezagvoerder van de Bernice, A J Huygens, die zwaargewond aan boord van de Nettie lag, overleed nog dezelfde dag.

De 22 juni 1940 werden de 8 geredden te Falmouth aan wal gebracht, onder wie Mevr. Marsman-Barendregt. Kapitein Huygens werd te Falmouth (GB) begraven.

Pubben, beiden afkomstig uit Belgie, letterkundige, Dhr. Hendrik Marsman, een jong echtpaar uit 's-Gravenhage dat zich met vakantie in Belgie had bevonden, 2 Rooms Katholieke geestelijken, de heer Raphaël van Berg, zijn echtgenote Mevr. Rose Deschamps (verpleegster) en hun zoontje Allain Rudolf van ca. 4 jaar oud.
