In de familie is bekend dat Bertha Planthafer met haar twee kinderen Bertha en Elsa maar zonder vader Johannes Jacob August Ebeling in 1914 naar Nederland is gekomen vanuit Hamburg. Dit was dus bij het uitbreken van WOI. De reden hiervoor is vooralsnog onduidelijk. Mogelijk is dat JJA opgeroepen werd voor de militaire dienst en dit probeerde te ontlopen en daarom het land ontvluchtte, misschien naar de VS.
