Notes about Willem Pietersz Moerman

Willem Pietersz Moerman is zelf op 14 jarige leeftijd naar Nederland vertrokken omdat hier meer Godsdienstvrijheid was. Hij zal naar alle waarschijnlijkheid met een groep mensen vertrokken/gevlucht zijn.
In Nederland vestigde hij zich op Rozenburg en noemde daar de plek waar hij ging wonen "Blankenburg" wat toen nog een eiland onder Rotterdam was.

Willem P.Moermanéén van de eerste bewoners van het eiland was Willem Pietersz. Moerman (ca.1575-1648), een tijdens de Tachtigjarige Oorlog vanuit Vlaanderen uitgeweken boer, vogelaar en jager. Waarschijnlijk is hij degene die het eiland de naam Blankenburg gaf, naar de plaats Blankenberge vanwaar hij afkomstig was. Binnen honderd jaar groeide de nederzetting uit tot een dorp met een eigen kerk en gerechtsgebouw.

Het dorpje Blankenburg dankte zijn naam aan het gelijknamige eiland. Dat ontstond als een zand- en kleiplaat in de Maas en werd waarschijnlijk in 1587 of 1588 verpacht aan een vogelaar. Deze eerste pachter maakte een eendenkooi, bouwde er zijn huis en nam de bedijking voortvarend ter hand; in 1612 was ruim 90 gemeten bedijkt. Wie die pachter was is onbekend, maar Willem Pietersz. Moerman (ca.1575-1648) was er vroeg bij betrokken. In 1605 woonde hij in elk geval al op het eiland. Hij was één van de velen die in de voorgaande jaren van oorlog vanuit Vlaanderen naar het noorden waren gevlucht. Hij had zijn familie en vaderland verloren maar vond een nieuw thuis op dit eiland, dat hij waarschijnlijk zelf hielp stichten. Toen het werk gedaan was noemde hij zich (aldus het rouwbord in de kerk van Zwartewaal) trots ‘Moerman van Blankenburg'.
