    Het fort Moerspui werd vermoedelijk kort vóór 1600 opgeworpen door de Spanjaarden en was volledig omgeven door water. Het fort maakte deel uit van een verdedingslijn naar België, Moerspui - Mendonk. In de 17e eeuw stonden binnen het fort vele bouwwerken, waaronder burgerwoningen, een kerk en een windmolen. Het fort lag in de geul de Moerspui en werd in 1682 aangetast door sterke stroming en verlaten. In 1701 werd Moerspui hersteld door Menno van Coehoorn, maar raakte daarna weer in verval.
