Hij was waarsman (1619-1621), hoogheemraad (1621-1626), heemraad en schepen (1621-1658) en stedehouder (1649-1658) van West-Barendrecht en Carnisse.

Tevens was hij landbouwer op een hofstede in het oude land van Carnis, gegoed aldaar en o.a. in West-Barendrecht.

Nadat Adriaen vanaf 1649 optrad als vervangend schout (stedehouder) heeft hij zich wel Steehouwer genoemd, vermoedelijk om verwarring met de schout Adriaen Hendricksz. Outraet te voorkomen. Hij wordt dus ook genoemd als Adriaen Hendrickszoon Steedehouwer.
