      In 1943 en 1944 werkte Maria Klazina van der Leeuw als coupeuse bij de firma Vos in den Haag. In zowel 1943 als in '44 zijn bedrijfsruitjes georganiseerd. Waar deze naar toe gingen is niet bekend, maar er zijn wel foto's van. Zie een daarvan onder op deze pagina.

      De volledige periode werkte Maria Klazina in de nabij gelegen kleuterschool aan de minister Lelystraat te Vlissingen. De eerste jaren waren er elke dag vier lokalen met houten vloeren schoon te maken. Daarop speelde elke dag weer ca. 30 kinderen per klas. 's Winters moest per lokaal de oliekachel voor acht uur aangestoken worden. Een taak voor de schoonmaakster, want die woonde toch vlak bij. Haar kinderen hebben in die periode heerlijk kunnen spelen in het schooltje.
      In de zomervakantie was er grote schoonmaak. Riet kreeg daarbij hulp van haar schoonmoeder Maria Pijl-Kroon.

      Op 19 november 1939 ontving Maria K. van de Leeuw haar persoonlijke distributiekaart. Nederland was weliswaar neutraal in de, in september 1939 verklaarde, tweede wereldoorlog, maar bereidde zich er wel op voor. De oorlog was verklaard nadat Duitsland Polen was binnen gevallen in september '39. De eerste wereldoorlog had geleerd dat ook neutrale landen te maken kregen met schaarste. Vandaar de opzet van een distributiesysteem voor voedsel, textiel, brandstof en andere zaken. Zie foto onder het kopje "Afbeeldingen' verderop deze pagina.

In de maanden nadat Florus J. (Floor) Stroo in juni 1945 in zijn woonplaats Vlissingen was gearriveerd, ging hij op bezoek bij zijn oude vrienden. Zo kwam hij op een gegeven moment ook bij Jan Versteeg. Daar zag hij een foto van een jonge vrouw, waarop hij opslagverliefd werd. Op zaterdag 4 augustus kwam zij naar Vlissingen en op zondag de vijfde leerde hij Maria Klazina (Riet) van der Leeuw kennen. De rest is geschiedenis. Met kerst 1945 zijn zij verloofd en op 19 maart 1948 getrouwd. Zie foto op pagina van Florus Jacobus Stroo.

De aanwezigheid in Vlissingen van de Haagse Riet van der Leeuw was gelegen in het feit dat na de hongerwinter veel kinderen en jongeren uit Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland en Utrecht naar familie gestuurd zijn. Onderandere om weer aan te sterken bij familie die al wel over voldoende voedsel beschikte. Zo ook Riet van der Leeuw. Zij ging logeren bij oom en tante Versteeg in Vlissingen. (De tante Helena Apolonia Versteeg - van de Leeuw was een zuster van de vader van Riet.) Daar arriveerde zij op zaterdag 4 augustus. Al de volgende dag kwam een vriend van haar neef Jan Versteeg langs. Floor Stroo meldde zich, om niet meer weg te gaan.
