Simon van Rhijn was een zoon van Philip van Rhijn en Maria Philips. Hij trouwde op 12 Maart 1896 in Amsterdam met Esther Dwinger uit Leeuwarden, een dochter van Abraham Dwinger en Penina Hirsch. Het echtpaar kreeg drie kinderen, t.w. Maria, Abraham en Penina, die de Holocaust heeft overleefd. Zijn vrouw Esther Dwinger overleed echter op 11 Augustus 1937 in Amsterdam en is twee dagen later, op 13 Augustus 1937 begraven op de Joodse Begraafplaats in Muiderberg. Zijn dochter Maria en zoon Abraham zijn in de Sjoa vermoord.

Simon van Rhijn woonde op de Nieuwe Keizersgracht 47hs, waar ook zijn dochter Maria haar man Levie Moscoviter woonden. Simon, zijn dochter Maria en schoonzoon Levie Moscoviter werden op 28 Januari 1943 afgevoerd naar kamp Westerbork. Zijn dochter en schoonzoon werden van Westerbork naar Vught gebracht en later via Westerbork gedeporteerd naar Sobibor waar zij zijn vermoord. Simon van Rhijn echter is van Westerbork al op 2 Februari gedeporteerd naar Auschwitz. Daar is hij direct bij aankomst op 5 Februari 1943 vermoord.
