Zijn vader en voorvaders kwamen uit Groningen.< /FONT>

Carel schreef een brief d.d. 21 september 1919 uit Minneapolis aa n zijn vrouw Gerritje en zijn zoon Johannes (John) in Nederland.
Hij schreef een lieve brief en verlangt Ger en zijn zoon "Opie" (toe n bijna 3 jaar) in de armen te sluiten. Klaarblijkelijk ondervond hi j een moeilijke tijd met geldelijke problemen. Hij schrijft maak je ge en zorgen, de geldzaken zijn in orde en wind je niet op over geld.
Hij schrijft ik heb 2 ton coal besteld en betaald. Ik heb nog geen nac htwerk, de trap naar boven is gemaakt en de kelder bijna klaar en dez e week ga ik aardappelen rooien. Ik heb nog niets uit Washington gehoo rd over m'n 2nd papieren.

"Worry" nou maar niet over geld, het komt allemaal terecht, ik heb gee n schulden, maar alleen m'n "bonds" verkocht, dat is alles. Lumber e n cement is betaald en nog een appeltje voor de dorst, dat is mooi hè , lieveling.
Kom nu maar gauw en vergeet niet om "Opie" mee te brengen, ik verlan g hem te zien, my darling boy, daddy's little fellow.

Op 23 september 1919 schrijft Carel aan zijn zwager Jo Severijn (de pr of) in Leerdam: Heden is Ger niet erg goed, maar ze heeft slecht wee r getroffen op zee en zeer waarschijnlijk zijn haar zenuwen overspanne n door angst, want de passagiers kregen bevel van de captein niet ui t te kleden voor 2 dagen en de boot was in gevaar van vergaan. Ik za l morgen weer schrijven, Carel.

Uit de data van de briefwisseling mag blijken dat Ger, gehuwd met Care l in Toronto in 1913, na de geboorte van hun zoon John in november 191 6, om onbekende redenen is teruggekeerd naar Nederland. Echter uit h et bootverhaal blijkt dat zij in 1919 weer op weg was naar Minneapolis , waar zij na 3 jaar is overleden.
