Notes about Gerardus Cornelis Franciscus van der Ende

Gerard (Geert) gaat na de lagere school in de tuin werken. Hij werkt bij verschillende tuinders o.a.bij Piet Bregman. Na zijn huwelijk met Adriana Cecilia (Sjaan) Oostennan, de dochter van de koster, werkt hij een tijdje bij de groenteveiling van Pijnacker. Als hij daar na ongenoegen weggaat, wordt hij tuindersknecht bij Siem van der Ploeg in de Oude Leede. Vrij snel daarna, in februari 1946, verhuist het gezin van de Van Brachtstraat 40 naar de Zuidweg 12. Het is weliswaar een goedkoop huis, maar het is wel erg ongerieflijk. Water, ook drinkwater komt uit een regenput; licht uit petroleumlampen en er wordt aanvankelijk gekookt op oliestellen en later op butagas. Wel kan Geert iets bij verdienen met het beheer en onderhoud van de Plas van Van Buysen en aan de vissers die daar komen vissen.
Eind jaren vijftig bevalt het Geert niet meer in de tuin. Hij gaat dan werken bij Nutricia in Zoetermeer, waar hij overigens ook aanzienlijk meer gaat verdienen. In 1974 verhuizen Geert en Sjaan naar een huis in de Magnolialaan in Plan-Noord (in Pijnacker). Tot hun overlijden blijven zij daar wonen.
