Op 10 oktober 1916 werd hij door de recruteringscommissie te Veurne goedgekeurd voor de dienst. Tot 1 februari 1917 was hij nog in verlof maarvanaf dan begon zijn werkelijke dienst met een eerste deel van zijn opleiding in Parginé l'Eveque. Vanaf 6 maart 1917 begon hij aan het laatste deel van zijn opleiding in het opleidingscentrum van de Artillerie te Eu.
Op 11 april 1917 kwam hij aan het front bij zijn eenheid. Vanaf 5 februari 1918 muteerde hij van het 1° Artillerie naar het 16° Artillerie.
Bij de start van het bevrijdingsoffensief lag zijn eenheid in de omgeving van Diksmuide.
Hij werd gedemobiliseerd op 1 februari 1919.
Behaalde eretekens
TWEE Frontstrepen
Frontstrepen werden als volgt toegekend :
de eerste streep na één jaar frontdienst, de volgende frontstreep voor elke volgende 6 maanden frontdienst.
Een zilveren staafje stond voor één frontstreep en een verguld staafje werd gebruikt ter vervanging van vijf zilveren staafjes.
Oorlogsherinneringsmedaille
Toegekend aan hen die bij de Belgische strijdkrachten dienden gedurendede Eerste Wereldoorlog en voldeden aan de criteria voor de Overwinningsmedaille.
Deze medaille werd ingesteld op 21 juli 1919.
Overwinningsmedaille
Uitgereikt aan allen die dienst deden in het gemobiliseerde Belgische leger tussen 1 augustus 1914 en 11 november 1918.

Deze bronzen medaille, aanvankelijk voorgesteld door de Franse veldmaarschalk Foch als een inter-geallieerde medaille en als dusdanig ook aangenomen, werd ingesteld op 15 juli 1919.
