Notes about Rijpke Beukema Rijkens

Rijpke was kwekeling bij zijn vader Gerrit in Garmerwolde en deed 12 oktober 1855 op 16 jarige leeftijd zijn eerste onderwijzersexamen in de kweekschool te Groningen voor onderwijzer vierde rang. in 1859 was hij hulponderwijzer derde rang in Garmerwolde en deed hij examen in wis- en natuurkunde. Van 1860-1866 was hij leraar wis- en natuurkunde aan het Gymnasium in Winschoten en van 1866-1868 directeur van de Burger dag- en avondschool in Groningen. In 1868 werd hij benoemd tot directeur van de Rijks Hogere Burgerschool in Warffum. Dit bleef hij tot 1897 toen hij een benoeming aanvaarde als directeur van de nieuw opgerichte Hogere Burgerschool in den Helder. in 1901 keerde hij terug naar Groningen. In 1907 verhuisd hij met zijn dochter naar den Haag. Hij schreef het: 'Gedenkboek ter herinnering aan het 25 jarig bestaan der Rijks Hogere Burgerschool te Warffum 1868-1893' 'De invloed van de school en de leermiddelen op het gezichtsvermogen der leerlingen', in 1983. Volgens de "Groninger encyclopedie" van K. ter Laan was Dr. R. Rijkens de eerste directeur van de Rijks HBS van Warffum, 1868-1898.
