Zijn zuster Maria Hubertina Cobben was gehuwd met Mathias Frans Petri uit Geleen een volle neef van zijn moeder Maria Johanna Petri. Piet Potten had vanaf zijn geboorte al last van een gezwolle tong. Vooral vers fruit en groente waren voor zijn tong funest, waardoor deze erg opzwol en ging ontsteken. Door de ziekte van Raynaud had hij veel last van witte/koude vingers.
