Geboren in de Spastraat te Rotterdam Zuid, een dwarsstraat van Dorpsstraat. Had aanvankelijk een opleiding tot electricien aan de ambachtsschool gevolgd. In de oorlog werd hij voor arbeidsdienst opgeroepen en heeft tijdelijk als fourier dienst gedaan. Hiervoor had hij een niet-jood verklaring nodig, waarbij hij voor het eerst gegevens over de voor-echtelijke geboorte van zijn moeder te zien kreeg (dit werd binnen de familie stil gehouden). Toen de Hitler-groet verplicht werd is hij ondergedoken. Hiertoe had hij eerst een ontstoken blindedarm voorgewend door de thermometer flink op te wrijven. De blindedarm werd te Utrecht operatief verwijderd.
In 1946 is hij een andere opleiding gaan volgen tot (hoofd)verpleegkundige. Hiervoor werd behaald het zwarte kruis (zwakzinnigenzorg, vier jaar naar het St Joris te Delft) en het witte kruis (twee jaar naar het Bergwegziekenhuis te Rotterdam) aangevuld met cursussen van enkele weken bij tandarts, oogarts etc.). Na weer een vaarperiode van zo'n negen maanden kwam hij weer terug en omdat de verloftijd kort zou zijn werd er alvast "met de handschoen" in ondertrouw gegaan: Gerard aan boord met de gezagvoerder. Het kerkelijk huwelijk werd in 1955 in de Ludwinakerk (nu afgebroken) in Schiedam voltrokken: Gerard 32 jaar .
Zo'n zes maanden na de geboorte van zijn eerste kind is hij vast aan walgaan werken als controlerend geneesheer, nog steeds bij de Nedlloyd. Pasin 1969 verwierf hij een nieuwe job bij de GGD te Rotterdam, afdeling besmettelijke ziekten. Uiteindelijk zijn zij, nadat alle kinderen waren uitgevlogen en Gerard met pensioen was, op 18 october1988 plotsklaps uitgeweken naar het rustigere en landelijke Zeeland (Westkapelle, Torenstraat). Aldaar overleed na een plotseling herseninfarct resulterend in een halfzijdige verlamming en een maand zonder voor- of achteruitgang Gerard tengevolge van een bijkomende longontsteking in het ziekenhuis te Vlissingen.
