Bathildis was van Angelsaksisch aristocratische afkomst en werd na stammenstrijd als slavin verkocht aan hofmeier Erchinoald van Narbonne (580-658) bij het Neustrische hof van koning Chlodovech II, die haar als zijn koningin koos. Echinoald volgde hofmeier Aega op in 641 en werd zelf opgevolgd na zijn dood in 658 door hofmeier Ebroin (bij Chlotarius III 653-673).
