Het huis Egmont van Meerestein is een zijtak van het huis Egmont, vermoedelijk ontstaan als bastaardtak. Over het ontstaan is niet heel veel bekend maar wel dat Wouter van Egmont op 10 maart 1280 van zijn zwager Sijmen van Haarlem beleend werd met Meerestein. Het kasteel Meerestein was gelegen tussen Heemskerk en Wijk en Duin, het huidige Beverwijk.
Meerestein ging over op de tweede zoon van Wouter, Floris van Egmond, die stamvader werd van het geslacht Meerestein. Zijn kleinzoon Jan van Egmond was de eerste die zich Van Meerestein liet noemen, rond het jaar 1330.
