Jantje vertrok in 1858 samen met Paulus Pieters Oosterhaven(52 jr) naar Noord-Amerika, ze laat man en dochter achter (P.P. Oosterhaven laat vrouw en 7 kinderen achter). Daar deden ze alsof ze getrouwd waren en Jantje overleed daar in 1880 als Jantje Sijbrands Oosterhaven, geb. Zwaal. P.P. Oosterhaven overleed in 1882 in Friesland, enkele maanden nadat zijn echte vrouw overleed.
Jantje ligt begraven op: Old Vriesland Cemetery in Zeeland Township (section 15, Gordon Street) R-6, L-12
