OVERGENOMEN VAN INGHIST.NL/VAN DER AA: Scato Gockinga steeg spoedig tot verschillende belangrijke ambten op. Hij was in 1672 afgevaardigd tot de vergadering der Staten Generaal, en nam in dien hagchelijken tijd gewigtige bezendingen waar. Hij was door de Staten in genoemd jaar, onder den eed van geheimhouding, gemagtigd, om met en benevens Willem III, van Beuningen en Beverningh met de Engelsche Gezanten Arlington en Buckingham te handelen. Hij diende destijds ook als Gedeputeerde te velde, trok in 1673 naar Utrecht, beraamde aldaar met zijne medegedeputeerden, na het verlaten der stad door de Franschen, de schikkingen, welke destijds zoo veel opspraak gaven, en teekende in hetzelfde jaar het vermaard verbond met den Koning van Spanje.
