Ultraconservatieve Groninger, die zich in beide Kamers te weer stelde tegen staatkundige en maatschappelijke hervormingen. Zoon van een hoogleraar, die lid was van de Nationale Vergaderingen van 1796 en 1797. Doorliep met veel gemak zijn rechtenstudie en bestudeerde ook de (Duitse) filosofie. Nadien advocaat, rechter en officier van justitie. In 1821 tot Tweede Kamerlid gekozen en daarvan in 1833 voorzitter. De koning benoemde hem in 1834 tot Eerste Kamerlid. Volgens de overlevering een gemoedelijk man, aangenaam gezelschap en goedhartig.
