Uitleg over maand- en schuldbrief en werfofficier
Maandbrief
Door middel van een maandbrief konden werknemers bij de VOC maximaal drie maandlonen per jaar bestemmen voor verwanten in de 1e graad: ouders, echtgenote of kinderen. In het soldijboek wordt alleen vermeld dat er een maandbrief is met de naam van de begunstigde. Bij onvoldoende saldo werd de maandbrief met voorrang uitbetaald. Betalingen op de maandbrief worden vermeld. De maandbrief was in het bezit van de begunstigde.

Schuldbrief
Een werknemer van de VOC kon een schuldbrief / obligatie ondertekenen tot maximaal ƒ300, afhankelijk van de rang. De schuldbrief was veelal op naam gesteld, maar overdraagbaar en werd aan de toonder uitbetaald. Bij onvoldoende saldo werd de transportbrief bij voorrang voldaan, na de maandbrief. In het soldijboek wordt alleen vermeld dat er een schuldbrief is en ook de terugbetaling, voor zover dat gebeurd is.
