Notes about Anna Maria Wiegmans

Alem, Maren en Kessel, gemeente in de provincie Noord-Brabant, gelegen in de Meijerij van 's-Hertogenbosch, ten noorden grenzend aan de Maas en de provincie Gelderland (Rossum), ten oosten aan de gemeenten Lith, ten zuiden aan Nuland en Empelen Meerwijk, en ten westen aan Empel en Meerwijk en de Maas. Oppervlakte: 2631 ha, uitsluitend rivierklei.

De gemeente is in 1819 ontstaan uit de afzonderlijke gemeenten Alem, Maren en Kessel, die in 1814 waren gevormd. Het grootste dorp in de gemeente was Maren, dat in 1899 uit 60 huizen (313 inwoners) telde. Daarnaast bestond de gemeente uit de dorpen Alem en Kessel, het gehucht Wilt en een gedeelte van Gewande. Het grootste gedeelte van het grondgebied werd ingenomen door de polder van het Laag Hemaal
De inwoners hielden zich bezig met landbouw, veeteelt, visserij en dijkwerken. De kaart toont een zestal eendenkooien in de polder van het Laag Hemaal.

De inwoners van Alem waren overwegend katholiek. Voor de katholieken in Kessel werd in 1843 een nieuwe kerk gebouwd. Daarnaast woonden er rond het midden van de eeuw enige hervormden en joden in de gemeente.
Er waren twee scholen: in Alem en in Maren.

De oude schans bij Gewande, die gedurende de Belgische opstand (1830-1839) opnieuw in gebruik was genomen, werd snel daarna ontruimd en raakte spoedig in verval.
De gemeente heeft veel geleden van overstromingen van de Maas. Dit gebeurde o.a. in 1825 en 1855, toen de Maasdijk tussen Alem en Maren doorbrak en de polder van het Laag Hemaal geheel onderliep
