Zeven straten slechts telt Bokhoven.
In het dorpje, dat sinds 1971 deel uitmaakt van de gemeente Den Bosch, wonen rond de driehonderd zielen. Onvoorstelbaar dat dit nietige vlekje ooit buitenlands gebied was, een katholieke enclave, een graafschap zelfs.
Vermoedelijk bestaat Bokhoven sinds 1150. Daarna ontwikkelde het zich tot een zelfstandig ministaatje met eigen munten, een eigen rechtbank, een eigen haven en – uiteraard – eigen belastingen. In 1363 was een ridder de eerste heer van Bokhoven.
In de loop van de geschiedenis is Bokhoven drie keer volledig verwoest. De eerste keer in 1498 door de Geldersen, dan in 1672 door de Fransen en in 1944/1945 door de Duitsers.
Als Den Bosch in 1629 is veroverd, blijft Bokhoven zelfstandig en wordt daardoor een katholieke enclave in een vijandige, protestantse omgeving. De katholieke moesten naar Bokhoven uitwijken voor hun geloofsuitoefening. Dat legde de kerk van Bokhoven geen windeieren. Bokhoven werd geregeld door de Maas onder water gezet. Daarom is de vloer van de kerk in 1838 een meter opgehoogd
