Niek leed aan een erfelijke skeletaandoening, die pijpbeenderen, ribben, bekken en schoudergordel aantast (HME-MO: Hereditaire Multiple Exostosen – Multiple Osteochondromen). Niek Mentink heeft de ziekte in mannelijke of vrouwelijke lijn van zijn vader of moeder (en voorouders) geërfd.
Vervolgens werden zijn zoon Nico, twee kleinkinderen en een achterkleinkind met de ziekte belast. Zoon Nico werd in Leiden geopereerd, waarna in de werkplaats van de Anna-Kliniek orthopedische schoenen, zolen en hakken werden gemaakt. Voor het maken van deze voorzieningen werd een bedrag neergeteld van ƒ 15,75. Dat was ongeveer een weekgeld voor een eenvoudige werkman.
