    From Mr Sasamoto, POW Research Network Japan; "Other Information": The transport ship (Tamahoko Maru) was torpedoed and he was among missing. KA18 P1-19 Time of sinking: 23:53, 24 June 1944 Location of wreck: 32° 24′ N 129° 38′ E. 208° 12 miles off Nomozaki, Nagasaki prefecture. The survivors of the Tamahoko maru were interned in No.14 Branch Camp in Nagasaki. This camp was located at 1.7 kilo meters from the epicenter and was completely destroyed by the atomic bomb on 9th August 1945. Eight POWs (7 Dutch and 1 British) were killed and many POWs were burned and injured. Pierre Edouard Léon O'Herne werd als krijgsgevangene op het schip Tamahoku Maru naar Japan vervoerd, zie:

〓 Ondergang van de TAMAHOKO MARU op 24 juni 1944 ongeveer 60 km ten zuid-westen van Naga­saki Het schip werd getorpedeerd door de Tang en zonk in slechts enkele minuten. De begeleidende Japanse schepen hielpen de krijgs­gevan­genen, die in zee dreven, niet. De volgende morgen verscheen een reddingsboot (kleine walvis­vaarder), die 211 drenke­lingen aan boord nam en in Nagasaki aan wal bracht. Nog dezelfde middag werden zij overgebracht naar het kamp Fukuoka 14B, Nagasaki.

〓 De Tamahoko Maru vertrok op 20 juni 1944 uit Takao-Formosa naar Japan. Behalve een lading kopererts, suiker en rijst, waren aan boord ook 772 krijgsgevangenen (PoW), waarvan er 560 stierven : 197 Britten, 42 Amerikane, 258 Australiers en 281 Nederlanders. Bovendien bevonden zich 500 Japanse soldaten aan boord. De krijgs­gevan­genen waren overgenomen van de MIYO MARU, die onderweg van Manila naar Takao in een tyfoon terecht kwam en zoveel schade opliep, dat het niet verder kon naar Japan.
