De vader is onbekend, maar er gaat wel een verhaal de ronde. Haar moeder heeft als dienstmeid in Nieuw-Amsterdam (Drenthe) gewerkt bij een van de rijke families daar. Zij is toen verkracht door de zoon des huizes rond de tijd dat ze zwanger raakte. De zoon is ook opgepakt en tot een gevangenisstraf veroordeeld voor de verkrachting. Het zou dus misschien mogelijk zijn om hem te achterhalen. Cornelia is later getrouwd met een Schonewille en die heeft Hendrika toen geadopteerd en kreeg ze zijn naam, ook al hou ik hier haar andere naam aan.
