Notes about Henk Benno Haagens

Henk Benno Haagens verhuisde in januari 1943 noodgedwongen met zijn ouders uit Middelharnis naar Amsterdam. Zijn ouders doken onder, maar zijn vermoedelijk verraden en direct op transport gesteld naar Sobibor. Daar werden ze in juli 1943 vergast. Via dominee Moulijn en verzetsman Piet Holwerda kwam Henk Benno in Friesland terecht. Eerst dook hij onder in Holwerd en daarna werd hij opgevangen door de familie Rintjema in Dokkum. Dit kinderloze echtpaar had een groothandel in levensmiddelen. In Holwerd speelde Henk Benno nog wel op straat, maar in Dokkum was dat te gevaarlijk. Hij zag er te Joods uit. De laatste twee jaar van de oorlog bleef hij dan ook binnen. Naar school ging hij ook niet.

Na de bevrijding wilden de Rintjema’s graag voor hem blijven zorgen. Ook Henk Benno wilde er niet meer weg. Na veel overleg werd besloten dat hij bij hen mocht blijven in Dokkum. Zijn zusje Clara werd opgevangen door een Joods echtpaar.

Henk Benno zou zijn hele leven in Dokkum blijven wonen. Hij trouwde vrij jong en nam met zijn vrouw Corrie een slijterij-distilleerderij over, die daarvoor overigens van NSB’ers was geweest. Later begon hij een delicatessenzaak met mijn tweede vrouw Erna. Haagens Lunchroom in Dokkum bestaat nog steeds.
