De vereniging wil slechte woningen opruimen of verbeteren, ‘met uitsluiting van elke gedachte aan winst voor hare leden, en zoo mogelijk in samenwerking met het gemeentebestuur’. Iedereen die dat wil kan lid worden van de vereniging: de jaarlijkse minimale bijdrage is daarom expres laag vastgesteld, namelijk op één gulden. Toch zijn het vooral de rijke inwoners van Deventer die interesse hebben. Voorzitter Ankersmit stelt alles in het werk om zoveel mogelijk rijke connecties lid te maken van de vereniging. De sociaal bewogen Ankersmit houdt er vooruitstrevende denkbeelden op na. In een tijd dat arbeiders gemiddeld werkdagen van 13 uur maken is hij voorstander van werkdagen van 8 à 9 uur. En hij laat zijn arbeiders scholen in hun vak.
