Stamvader van de familie Lycklama a Nijeholt. Winsemius noemde hem "een treffelyck ghequalificeert man, soo van gheslachte als goederen".
Vermeldt van hem, dat hij "uyt het gheslachte van Steenwyck" stamde.
Woonde op Friesburg bij het dorp Nijeholt (Nijeholtpade) en dat dit geslacht zich naar dit dorp, a Nijeholt, vernoemd heeft.
In de eerste helft van de 17e eeuw ontstond uit het patronym Lyckles de achternaam Lycklama, terwijl de toevoeging a Nijeholt als herinnering aan het langdurig verblijf van dit geslacht te Nijeholtpade eveneens uit deze tijd dateert.

De komst van de Lycklama's -grietmannen, grondeigenaren en verveners- is voor het cultuurpatroon van het noordelijke gedeelte van Wolvega van grote betekenis geweest. Door hen kwamen in de zestiende eeuw de vervening en de bosbouw pas goed tot ontwikkeling.
In of ongeveer 1626 laten ze aan de oostkant van het dorp de Lycklamastins bouwen. Voor de afvoer van de turf en het hout bestond er behoefte aan waterwegen. Daarom lieten de Lycklama's een vaart graven vanuit de Tjonger door het veengebied via Nijeholtwolde naar Wolvega: de Lycklamavaart.

Story

In Friesland eindigen veel namen op -ma, zoals Boersma, Bergsma, etcetera. Dat -ma betekent 'zoon van'. Dus Lycklama betekent 'zoon van Lyckle'. Dat slaat op Lyckle Eables, die van 1517 tot 1521 grietman van Stellingwerf was. De zonen van Lyckle Eables verspreidden zich over Friesland en om bij te kunnen houden over wie men het had, werd er een plaatsbepaling aan de naam toegevoegd.
Het woordje '????i' (uit het Frans) betekent namelijk van/uit. En Nijeholt betekent 'Nieuwe hout', oftewel de nieuwe bossen.

Dus Lycklama ????i Nijeholt betekent 'zoon van Lyckle uit de nieuwe bossen' (dit doet overigens vermoeden dat er ook een familie bestaat met de naam 'Lycklama ????i Oldeholt', maar daar is mij niets over bekend...).
