"Toen moeder Derkje Jans Huizenga was overleden kwam er verandering van woonplaats voor vader Kuiper (Dirk zelf?) onder voogdij gesteld van broer Roelf, toen in 1903 onderwijzer in Ruinerwold-Koekange, werd ik dat gezin opgenomen en ging van maart tot september 1903 ter lagere school. Daarna wrd ik in de bakkerswereld opgenomenen kwam op de vloedijk in Kampen. 2 jaar in Kampen doorgebracht ging ik naar Assen (daar mijn voogd verhuisd was van Ruinerwold Koekange naar Boven Smilde) was ik in Assen dichter bij mijn voogd komen wonen. Na 2 jaren werken in Assen verhuisde ik naar Stadskanaal, waar harde dienst in vele werken en lang werken van des morgens 5 uur tot 's avonds 7 uur 30 gewerkt zonder andere onderbreking dan middageten. Na 1 jaar harde dienst beloning 90 gulden plus .... Vandaar in Stadskanaal opgebroken naar Groningen waar in 18-10-'13 onze verloving plaatsvond."
