Roelf was eerder getrouwd met Trijntje van der Laan en kreeg daarmee zes kinderen (Martje (86), Klaas (73), Maria (87), Trijntje (3 mnd), Jakob (2), en Trijntje (0). Tijdens de geboorte van de laatste dochter (Trijntje) is moeder Trijntje waarschijnlijk in het kraambed, maar in ieder geval zéér kort daarna, op 31-jarige leeftijd overleden. Naar verluidt was het niet de bedoeling dat Roelf nog kinderen zou krijgen met zijn nieuwe echtgenote Klaassien Leemborg. Er kwamen er nog acht !
