Het geslacht Schuttrop woont reeds vanaf 1612 in Odoorn. Daarvoor in Zwolle en daarvoor in Twente waar zij 16 leengoederen van de bisschop van Utrecht in leen hadden. De vroegste vermelding gaat terug tot 1391 (overlijden van Herman van Schuttorp).

De naam (Schuttrop) is afkomstig van het stadje Schuttorf (5 km achter Bentheim), dit heette vroeger Schutrop.

Het geslacht Schutrup beschikt over een familiewapen en een lakafdruk van dit wapen is nog aanwezig in de volmachten der Geldersche Leenkamer. De omschrijving van het familiewapen is:
In goud een rode burcht getopt met twee afgewende kanonnen op hun afuit met als helmteken ook een kanon op zijn afuit. De plaats van vermelding en omschrijving van dit familiewapen is in het boekwerk "Lapidarium Zeylanium". Hiervan zijn nog slechts twee exemplaren overgebleven, waavan één in het bezit is van het Centraal Archief.
