Notes about Arie Bos VANDENHOEK

Arie had two marriages, one to Janingje Goudriaan an another to Machildia Rietveld. He emigrated to the US with his wife, and six children. His daughter Johanna (Doorn) was then 22. When his wife died three days after arrival in Harrison, Arie was left to raise six children. Teunis and Johanna found work at neighbors homes and the younger children went to school. They stayed with brother Teunis Bos until they were able to rent a farm a little over a year later.

In a letter to his family in Holland, Ari writes: "Everyone speaks Dutch here. For miles around, there are only Hollanders. We have two churches in Harrison, one Dutch Reformed and one Christian Reformed. I and the others are members of the Christian Reformed Church. The children also go to Sunday school. I am not sorry we came to America, but I am sorry that we did not come earlier." Dutch American Voices: Letters from the United States, 1850 to 1930. p. 147-149
