Notes about Maria Elizabeth HAIJTINK

From the Alton Democrat of Feb 11, 1888.
Mrs. Scholten, and aged lady, dies mysteriously.
This community was startled somewhat last Saturday by the report the Mrs. E. J. (Evert) Scholten, had been found dead in her home, and that perhaps there was foul play. A careful investigation by the coroner's jury shows that such a report was with out foundation, and that the following as the facts.
Last Wednesday Mrs. Scholten who was 74 years of age, and a widow residing alone in her residence adjoining the Reformed Church in this city, called on several friends and that was the last she was seen alive. The next day Rev. Zwemer and a visitor called at her residence and knocked, but getting no response went away. On Friday her son, John, called and knocked, but getting no reply, tried the door and found it locked. He supposed she was away calling on some neighbor, left. He returned Saturday afternoon and finding the door still locked went to several neighbors, but none of them had seen his mother since Wednesday. The he burst open the door and found the corpse of his mother lying peacefully in bed. Dr. De Bey was summoned, but as everything showed a peaceful death, with no indications of foul play, the relatives refused to allow a post mortem, and the direct cause of her death will always remain a mystery. She is supposed to have died from old age, or heart disease. The funeral occurred from the Reformed Church on Monday, and quite a crowd of her friends and mourners followed the remains of the good old woman to her last resting place. (from the Alton Reformed Church deaths Elizabeth Haytink died Feb 2, 1888) Upon searching www.genlais.nl found the marriage of Maria Elisabeth Haijtink b. about 1814 at Zutphen Neth., married to Evert Jan Scholten born about 1810 on 6 Mar 1839 at Zutphen Neth. Maria was the daughter of Jan Haijtink and Heile Werkhoven. Evert was the son of Derk Scholten and Hendrika Harmsen.
