Moeder van de echtgenote heeft verklaard niet te kunnen schrijven.
Dirk leert Griet kennen in Het Tolhuis (A'dam). Als laatste woonde hij in de Bremstraat / A'dam. Woont tijdens de oorlog op Mosveld / A'dam nrd. Op 17-07-'43 voert het Amerikaanse 8e Luchtleger een bombardement uit op de Fokker-vliegtuigfabrieken. Ze missen doel en treffen woningen: 200-300 burgerdoden. Dochter Gré vertelt: "We kregen 's morgens om 9 uur lucht-alarm. Ik was nog niet helemaal aangekleed. Moeder wilde de trap afgaan, vader was in de kamer. Toen gebeurde het. Op de trap stond de fiets van vader, die werd bedolven onder een muur vlak voor de voeten van moeder. Die mankeerde niets. Vader zag stoelen door de kamer vliegen, ramen eruit, gewond door glas. Maar dat leek erger dan het was." Wel is de woning aan 't Mosveld zwaar beschadigd. Vader Dirk zoekt noodgedwongen met vrouw en dochter Gré geruime tijd een onderkomen bij zijn - krap behuisde - kinderen, o.a. bij de gezinnen van zijn dochters Rie en Ger. Vader Dirk blijft tot aan zijn dood een krasse man, die vanuit de Smaragdstraat naar Gré in de Jan van Galenstraat gaat om te klaverjassen. Een beetje vals spel ontgaat hem zelden of nooit.
